I get really depressed about being 31 years old and having had a hysterectomy. I know that I have 2 beautiful children, an amazing husband, and more reasons than I deserve to be grateful. And I am. However, every once in awhile this sadness creeps up inside, and I know that the trauma from last summer is still just below the surface and hasn't been really processed and dealt with yet.
I feel really hormonal today. The good news is that I was able to keep my ovaries. The downside is that I still get PMS, just without the usual "Oh! That's why I've been such an emotional wreck the past few days."
I'm probably just having PMS. I just have no way of actually knowing. And that in and of itself is making me emotional. At least with having a preemie and with HELLP Syndrome, there were people that had gone through both before that I could talk to for insight about the experience. The closest connection I have found is someone that at my age had breast cancer and a mastectomy a week after getting the news. I can't pretend to know what that's like, but there is something to losing a core physical part of what it means to be a woman in a sudden and dramatic fashion.
Now if I could just figure out whether it's my ovaries or my lack of a uterus that has me in the dumps. Surely there must be an online community for that. With the odds I went through to get to where I am today, I don't think there are many of us out there. And that's a good thing.
By the way, my phone's spell check wants to change hysterectomy to hysterically. My point exactly.
